Falcon 9 is a partially reusable, two-stage orbital rocket built and operated by SpaceX. It is the most-flown active launch vehicle in the world, and the workhorse behind SpaceX's Starlink broadband megaconstellation.

What was the payload?

The payload was a batch of Starlink satellites — flat-panel spacecraft that form SpaceX's low-Earth-orbit internet constellation. How did the flight profile work?

The two-stage Falcon 9 followed the standard Starlink profile. After liftoff from SLC-4E, the first stage burned for roughly two and a half minutes before main engine cutoff and stage separation. The nine Merlin 1D engines of the booster generate about 7,600 kN of thrust at sea level, enough to loft a full stack of Starlink satellites toward orbit.

The second stage, powered by a single vacuum-optimized Merlin engine, continued to orbital velocity while the first stage flipped and returned for a propulsive landing on a droneship stationed in the Pacific Ocean. Recovering and reflying boosters is central to SpaceX's cost model; individual Falcon 9 first stages have now flown more than 20 times each. The fairing halves, which protect the payload during ascent, are also recovered and reused across multiple flights.

Why launch Starlink from Vandenberg?

Vandenberg Space Force Base on California's central coast supports launches into higher-inclination and polar orbits by flying south over open ocean. These trajectories fill in the Starlink shells that serve users at higher latitudes, complementing the lower-inclination missions flown from Florida. SLC-4E has been SpaceX's dedicated West Coast Falcon 9 pad since 2013, hosting a steady cadence of Starlink and rideshare flights.

SpaceX maintains an aggressive launch tempo, targeting well over 100 Falcon 9 flights per year, with the majority dedicated to expanding and replenishing the Starlink network. Each mission adds capacity and replaces older satellites, which are actively de-orbited at end of life to keep low Earth orbit sustainable.
