As of July 2026, roughly 40,000 objects are tracked in orbit around Earth — of which about 11,000 are working satellites and the rest is space debris: dead satellites, spent rocket bodies and fragments. The European Space Agency estimates a far larger uncatalogued cloud — 1.2 million+ pieces larger than 1 cm and 130 million+ larger than 1 mm. How much debris is up there, by size

Most debris is too small to track individually. ESA's Space Environment Report 2025 estimates the population by size:

  • ≈54,000 objects larger than 10 cm — fist-sized and up. Most are catalogued and tracked by space-surveillance networks.
  • ≈1.2 million objects from 1 to 10 cm — marble to fist-sized. Too numerous to track individually, each able to disable a satellite.
  • ≈130 million objects from 1 mm to 1 cm — untrackable, but at 28,000 km/h even a fleck of paint pits a spacecraft window.

Does space debris fall back to Earth?

Yes — atmospheric drag pulls low-orbit debris down constantly. Small pieces burn up harmlessly; larger rocket bodies survive to the ground a few dozen times a year, almost always over ocean or empty land. The live figure on this page is the number of catalogued fragments Cosmik tracks from the four largest orbital break-up events (Cosmos 1408, Fengyun-1C, Iridium 33 and Cosmos 2251), parsed hourly from the public CelesTrak / NORAD catalogue — the same data behind our 3D map. The wider figures — ~40,000 tracked objects and the 1.2 million / 130 million estimates by size — are from the ESA Space Environment Report 2025 (MASTER model, data to August 2024) and are clearly cited as estimates, not our own live count.
