What happened?
SpaceX successfully launched the Starlink Group 17-46 mission on a Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket at 02:58 UTC on July 2, 2026, lifting off from Space Launch Complex 4E (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Space Force Base, California. The mission delivered a batch of Starlink internet satellites to low Earth orbit and marked another routine success for SpaceX's workhorse rocket.
Starlink is SpaceX's satellite broadband constellation, designed to deliver high-speed, low-latency internet to users worldwide from low Earth orbit. The Falcon 9 Block 5 is a partially reusable, two-stage orbital rocket and the most-flown launch vehicle in operation, according to SpaceX.

What was the payload?
The payload was a batch of Starlink v2 Mini satellites for the Group 17 shell. Each Falcon 9 Starlink mission carries a stack of flat-packed spacecraft that are released together and then use onboard ion thrusters to raise themselves to their operational altitude of roughly 550 kilometers.
The Starlink constellation is by far the largest ever built, with more than 7,000 satellites operating in orbit and providing service to over 100 countries and territories, according to SpaceX. Regular launches like Group 17-46 continuously replenish and expand the network, adding capacity and replacing older units as they retire.
What about the booster?
The Falcon 9 first stage is designed for reuse, with SpaceX having demonstrated more than 20 flights on individual boosters. West Coast Starlink missions typically recover the first stage on the droneship stationed in the Pacific Ocean, allowing the booster to be refurbished and reflown. The payload fairing halves are also recovered and reused across missions.
Reusability is central to the Starlink economics: by flying the same hardware repeatedly, SpaceX has driven down the cost of building out the constellation and increased its launch cadence to a record pace.
