What happened?

SpaceX successfully launched the Starlink Group 17-36 mission on a Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket from Space Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, on 30 April 2026 at 02:42 UTC. The mission delivered another batch of Starlink internet satellites to low Earth orbit, adding to SpaceX's rapidly expanding broadband constellation.

Starlink is SpaceX's satellite internet network, a mega-constellation of thousands of spacecraft in low Earth orbit designed to provide high-speed broadband to nearly any point on the globe. The Falcon 9 Block 5 is the world's most-flown operational orbital rocket, a two-stage vehicle whose first stage returns to Earth for reuse.

Did the launch succeed?

Yes. According to SpaceX, the mission was a success. The Falcon 9 lifted off on schedule from the Vandenberg pad, its nine Merlin engines producing more than 7,600 kilonewtons of thrust at sea level to power the vehicle through the pre-dawn California sky.

After stage separation, the first stage executed its descent and recovery, while the second stage continued to orbit to deploy the Starlink satellites. This mission flew from the West Coast, placing its payload into an orbit inclined for coverage over different latitude bands than Starlink flights out of Florida.

What was the payload?

The payload was a stack of Starlink v2 Mini satellites for Group 17-36. Each Falcon 9 Starlink mission from Vandenberg typically carries between 20 and 28 satellites, depending on satellite version and target orbit. The v2 Mini spacecraft offer significantly more bandwidth per unit than the original Starlink v1.0 design.

The satellites were deployed into low Earth orbit, generally around 500-560 km altitude, where they use onboard ion thrusters to raise themselves to their operational altitude and slot into their assigned orbital shells. The Starlink constellation now comprises more than 7,000 operational satellites, making it by far the largest satellite network ever built.

Why Vandenberg?

Space Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg is SpaceX's primary West Coast launch site, used for missions requiring polar or high-inclination orbits. Launching south and southwest over the Pacific Ocean allows Falcon 9 to reach the shells of the Starlink constellation that provide coverage at higher latitudes.

How does Falcon 9 reuse work?

The Falcon 9 first stage is designed to fly, land, and fly again. SpaceX routinely lands boosters either on autonomous drone ships in the Pacific or on ground pads. Individual Falcon 9 boosters have now flown well over 20 missions each, a reuse cadence that has made SpaceX the dominant global launch provider and driven down the cost of reaching orbit.
