SLC-40 is one of SpaceX's busiest launch pads, refurbished for Falcon 9 operations and supporting a large share of the company's Starlink deployment flights from Florida's Space Coast.
What is the payload?
The payload was a batch of Starlink satellites for SpaceX's broadband constellation. Each Falcon 9 Starlink mission typically carries between 20 and 24 v2 Mini satellites, depending on orbital target and satellite configuration. Once released, the spacecraft use onboard ion thrusters to raise themselves to their operational altitude and slot into their assigned orbital plane.
The Starlink network is the largest satellite constellation ever built, with more than 8,000 satellites launched to date and thousands more planned. The Group 10 designation refers to a specific orbital shell within the Gen2 architecture, ensuring the new satellites integrate with existing coverage without conflicting with active planes.
How did the booster landing go?
Falcon 9's first stage is designed for reuse, with SpaceX routinely flying individual boosters more than 20 times. On Starlink missions launched from Cape Canaveral, the first stage typically returns to a droneship stationed in the Atlantic Ocean roughly eight minutes after liftoff, while the second stage continues to orbit to deploy the payload.
Booster recovery is central to SpaceX's economics: reusing first stages and payload fairings has allowed the company to sustain a launch cadence exceeding 100 Falcon 9 flights per year, the highest of any rocket in operational history.
