What happened?
CAS Space successfully launched its new medium-lift Kinetica 2 rocket on its maiden flight on 30 March 2026 at 11:00 UTC from Launch Area 140 at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the People's Republic of China. The demo flight carried the Qingzhou prototype cargo spacecraft and was declared a success, marking a major milestone for the Chinese commercial launch sector.
Kinetica 2 (Lijian-2) is a two-stage, liquid-propellant orbital launch vehicle developed by CAS Space, the commercial spinoff of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is the company's first liquid-fueled rocket, following the solid-fueled Kinetica 1, and is designed to expand China's capacity to launch cargo and satellite constellations to low Earth orbit.

What was the payload?
The primary payload was the Qingzhou prototype spacecraft, an uncrewed cargo vehicle. Qingzhou ("light boat") is being developed as a low-cost logistics spacecraft intended to resupply China's Tiangong space station and support future in-orbit operations. This demonstration flight tested the spacecraft's core systems in a real launch and orbital environment.
A dedicated cargo craft matters because China currently relies on the Tianzhou series for station resupply. Adding a commercially built alternative like Qingzhou introduces redundancy and competition into China's logistics chain.
What is Kinetica 2?
Kinetica 2 is CAS Space's step up from the solid-fueled Kinetica 1, which has flown multiple times to loft small satellites. The move to liquid propellant gives the vehicle substantially greater payload capacity and the throttling control needed for heavier cargo missions and, in the future, recovery of the first stage.
