What happened?

Falcon 9 is a two-stage, partially reusable orbital rocket built and operated by SpaceX, and it is the workhorse of the company's Starlink deployment campaign. Starlink is SpaceX's low-Earth-orbit broadband constellation, which has grown to more than 8,000 operational satellites — the largest satellite network ever built.

The payload was a stack of Starlink v2 Mini satellites for the Group 17 shell. The satellites separated into an initial low parking orbit, after which they use onboard ion thrusters to raise themselves to their operational altitude of roughly 550 km.

How does Falcon 9 reusability work?
Every Falcon 9 Block 5 first stage is designed for repeated flights. After stage separation, the booster performs a controlled descent and lands either on an autonomous droneship in the Pacific or back at a landing zone, allowing SpaceX to refly the same hardware. This reusability is central to the economics that let SpaceX launch Starlink batches at a cadence of several missions per week. The company has flown individual boosters more than 20 times, and the payload fairing halves are also recovered and reused.
Why launch Starlink from Vandenberg?
Vandenberg Space Force Base on California's central coast is SpaceX's primary West Coast launch site, ideal for missions requiring higher-inclination orbits because rockets can fly south over open ocean. The Group 17 shell relies on these polar-leaning trajectories to fill in coverage that eastward launches from Florida cannot reach. SLC-4E has hosted dozens of Falcon 9 flights since SpaceX refurbished the pad, previously used by the Titan rocket family.
