What happened?
SpaceX successfully launched the Starlink Group 17-27 mission on a Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket from Space Launch Complex 4E (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, on 15 April 2026 at 04:29:49 UTC. The Falcon 9 is a two-stage, partially reusable orbital rocket built by SpaceX, and this flight added another batch of Starlink satellites to the world's largest broadband constellation.

What was the payload?
The payload was a batch of Starlink v2 Mini satellites for Group 17-27, one of the constellation's orbital shells served from Vandenberg. Falcon 9 launches from the West Coast typically target higher-inclination orbits, which complement the shells launched from Florida to give the network global coverage, including higher latitudes.
Each Falcon 9 Starlink flight from Vandenberg typically carries around 20 or more of the upgraded satellites, which feature more bandwidth capacity per unit than the original Starlink v1.0 spacecraft. The satellites separate in a low parking orbit and then use onboard ion thrusters to raise themselves to their operational altitude of roughly 550 km over the following weeks.
Why Vandenberg?
SLC-4E is SpaceX's primary West Coast launch pad and supports polar and Sun-synchronous trajectories that are not accessible from Cape Canaveral due to range-safety constraints. The pad has hosted dozens of Falcon 9 flights and is a workhorse for both Starlink shell filling and rideshare missions.
What about the booster landing?
Per SpaceX's standard flight profile, the Falcon 9 first stage separated a few minutes into flight and executed a controlled descent to a droneship stationed in the Pacific Ocean. Booster recovery is central to SpaceX's cost model: individual Falcon 9 first stages have flown more than 20 times each, and reusability has enabled the company to sustain a record-setting launch cadence exceeding 130 orbital flights per year.
The reused fairing halves are also recovered from the ocean and refurbished for subsequent missions, further reducing per-launch costs.
