Can you see satellites with a telescope?
Yes — you can see satellites through a telescope, and the ISS even shows recognisable structure at high magnification. The catch is speed: a low-orbit satellite crosses the sky in minutes, far faster than a telescope's narrow field can track by hand, so the naked eye does the finding and the scope does the detail.
The naked eye finds it, the scope reveals it
The reliable method is to know a bright pass is coming, spot the moving point with your eyes, then swing a low-power, wide-field eyepiece ahead of it and let it drift through view. At 30–50× the ISS resolves from a dot into an angular shape with visible solar panels; fainter satellites just look like sharper moving stars.
What you can catch
The International Space Station is by far the best target — big, bright and low. Large rocket bodies and the freshly launched Starlink train are also within reach. Geostationary satellites are a different game: 36,000 km up, they hold still against the moving stars, so in a long exposure they appear as fixed dots while the stars trail.
