How do satellites look in the sky?
A satellite looks like a plain white star that glides steadily across the sky — no blinking, no coloured lights, no sound — crossing from one horizon toward the other in about two to five minutes. That steady, silent motion is the giveaway: it is sunlight reflecting off the satellite while you stand in darkness below.
Satellite vs plane: the quick test
A plane blinks. Aircraft carry red, green and white navigation lights that flash on a regular beat, and low ones hum or roar. A satellite shows a single, constant point of white light with no flashing and no sound. If the light is pulsing with colour, it is almost certainly a plane; if it is a smooth steady dot, it is a satellite.
Speed helps too: a satellite in low orbit crosses the whole sky in a few minutes at a constant pace, faster than a high-altitude plane but far slower than the sudden streak of a meteor, which is gone in under a second.
Satellite vs star
Stars stay put over the minutes you watch (they drift only with the slow turn of the whole sky); a satellite visibly moves against them. So if a 'star' is sliding across the background in a straight line, it is a satellite or the ISS — the brightest of them all, brighter than any real star and often mistaken for a plane until you notice it never blinks.
